For every unemployed person looking for a job there are several others willing to help them find employment... for a price. While paying employment services and going through executive search companies are long standing practices, many in today's job market are answering advertisements for job offering high pay, even for those without credible job skills and with the advertisement's professional presentation, many of those who can least afford it, are sending away for the information.

With a computer, online access and a web site, just about anyone can become a job placement counselor overnight. No experience required. Unfortunately, what most of these online services provide are outdated help wanted ads from around the country. They may peruse the want ads of many different newspapers, sorting the ads by region and when someone comes to them for help finding a job, they send out the ads relating to the field of employment being sought.

The problem with many of these services is that they don't bother to purge their employment lists on a daily basis and many of the ads can be several weeks old before the job seeker ever receives them. If the ad requests the applicant send in a resume, it may arrive weeks after the position has been filled and the job seeker will never know what they didn't hear from the company again.

While there are a few online sources for finding a job, sticking with the larger online job services is the best bet. Even then, many of the jobs are filled faster than they are removed from the site's list of openings.

However, just because one job is filled doesn't mean you should forget about using online resources for your job search. It simply means be careful about which service you choose to use.

Additionally, you have probably seen advertisements about government confiscated homes, cars and merchandise being offered for sale at ridiculously low prices and you can have the list by calling a toll-free number and then giving your credit card number to pay for the list along with postage and handling. When the list arrives there is a good chance much of the information is old. Cars and houses have already been sold and you will essentially have a history book of past sales.

While buying this information can cut down time spent looking for deals, the federal government's General Accounting Office offers this same, timely information on its website available for free, along with the information needed to make a bid online. It may take a little time searching for what you're looking for, but the pay off is the money you save by not buying an outdated list. Just about every list being sold online can be compiled on your own for free, minus the time you spend cruising the internet.

I can’t tell you how many times I have chatted with a business owner who is just learning to network or who has just joined a networking organization. Usually they call me because someone has said to them, “You need to find out how to network properly.” This comment is typically in response to the method that the unschooled person (newbie)is using when they think they are networking.

First, let’s get one thing straight. Networking is the business tool that is used to develop relationships. Relationships are the foundation from which business springs. Networking is not selling a product or service; this is where, for many, the confusion begins.

To the newbie I will often explain that the best way to develop a strong relationship is to help others. Emphatically they say, “But I am going to help them. My ____________ is going to make them __________! In other words, the newbie thinks that “helping” is encouraging their target to their purchase their offering. They couldn’t be more wrong.

When standing nose-to-nose with this new person, buying something is probably the last thing the business person wants to do. This is especially true if there is a high level of confidence needed to purchase the offering. Trust and confidence take time to develop. Instead, the newbie needs to ask questions and listen, attempting to find out what the person in front of them is trying to accomplish. In fact, the conversation might not even focus on the newbie or their product at all. Instead, the newbie’s sole offering at that moment might just be their undivided attention. And even if that is all they can give at this point in their career - that’s a huge start.

As the newbie develops into a better networker, they will begin to realize how to help others - really help - rather than just trying to sell their wares. They might know someone to introduce to the business person or they might want to invite them to a meeting they are planning to attend. What they may not realize is that the person opposite them is listening to their needs too. Because the newbie is not selling, the business person does not have to be defensive. They will have their ears open as to how the newbie can be helped. In time they may, or may not, want to make a purchase. But if not, they probably will be willing to help connect their new, and now better known associate with others who actually do need and want the product.

As time and relationships evolve, the newbie will no longer be just that. Instead, they will become accomplished networker. Others will be sent to them for networking education. The whole circle will continue to grow until the network become stronger than the individuals. Products and services will be sold, but now – thanks to this new outlook - it will be someone else helping to sell those products or services rather than the former newbie having to do it all.

How I chose an MLM

So many of my friends literally shreiked in horror when I told them I was going to give MLM a go. Why, they asked, when you already have a great job on a good salary and as a lecturer you have status and respect.

Well, to the best of my knowledge status and respect did not pay my bills and all my skills and knowledge simply made me a good employee. We were still struggling to pay our mortgage, save for holidays, keep up with the credit cards, pay for the kids music,dance and drama lessons etc.

By 40 instead of life getting easier it just kept getting harder with literally no end in site. In fact it began to feel like a life sentence.

So, that's why I started to look round for another way. I knew lots of people were making money by working online and I couldn't see why we shouldn't give it a try.

Now I have a Post Grad degree in business so I had a reasonable idea what to look out for. Here was what I decided to avoid - anything where making money depended solely on getting others to join, anything with a product that would not sell in traditional retail, anything that said 'in pre-launch' or 'get in now' etc

Even though I have been involved for over a year now I am still amazed at the complete rubbish people will sign up to. It is so easy to tell the difference between a scam (pyramid/scheme/programme etc) and a real online business.

A business is an entity whose sole purpose is to generate profit through the sale of goods or services. If there is no product or service being sold then whatever it is it certainly is not a business. And if the profit (or the money) is being created from sign up fees/sale of start up kits/sale of ongoing training tapes etc then again there is no real product at the heart of the business.

A friend of mine joined Amway many years ago and spent a fortune on the products and training books.tapes etc. After about 2 years he quit and asked me why he hadn't made any money. When I explained that it was because he was his only real customer and that they made more from the training materials than they did from the products he got it. That's why all new distributors were virtually forced to sign up to the training programme - there's a huge profit on selling tapes that cost pennies to make for a couple of pound each.

I decided to seek out a business that did not require me to collect or distribute any stock - I had no time and if I wanted to go into retail I would open a shop. I wanted a 'product' that was placed in a market sector experiencing long term and sustained growth and something that already had mass market appeal (as opposed to some lame product that nobody had ever heard of that came with spurious and vastly over-inflated claims of what it could do)

I also wanted the company to be legitimate and to have been trading for more than 3 years (most MLMs don't make it to 12 months) I wanted a sponsor who would be actively involved in helping me to grow my down line rather than someone who relied on auto-responders/emails and newsletters.

What I know about business is that there is no such thing as a free lunch or easy money or get-rich-quick. Millions of these schemes/pyramids come and go and I must be invited to join at least 20 per week - I have already met many people who have lost money or not earned anything like they were promised.

Business is HARD WORK! MLM takes time, effort, dedication and a genuine willingness to help others - not remotely via email etc but personally either face to face or by phone & web cam. I treat all my down line the way I want to be treated myself - with respect and a heart felt willingness to help.

It took me 6 months research to find the MLM I wanted to join and it has been the best decision I (and my wife) ever made. Though we are not millionaires yet it is a great feeling to know that we will be and we have certainly met some amazing people along the way.

It does not have to cost an arm and a leg to advertise your home business, unless you fail to plan and fail to test.

As much as is possible, you should always test your advertising. If you jump in and start dumping tons of money in to advertising without first testing your advertising, you might find yourself broke and without sales at the end of the road. Most people who commit this error write off their failure on the home business they chose or the economy or any of a hundred other excuses. But, if they are unwilling to take responsibility for their mistake, they will never learn from their mistake. Don't let this be you.

LESSON 2

All testing should be done in blocks. If you begin to advertise simultaneously in newspapers, radio and television, how will you know which advertising is bringing people to your cash register? You won't. All you will know that something might be working, but you will not know what is actually doing the trick.

Even if you tell people in your advertising to tell you how they found you, my experience shows that fewer than 10% of the people ever will tell you anything --- and those people who do may not even get the facts straight! You cannot rely on your customers to tell you what advertising is working for your home business. You must put in the extra effort to know for yourself.

LESSON 3

Only when you have a proven and solid advertising portfolio should you venture to drop big bucks in an advertising campaign. Even then, you should be careful to keep further measurements to determine how much the maximum advantage of an ad would be. Sometimes you might be able to reach ten times as many people, but depending on the kind of media and other factors, the additional exposure will only generate twice as many sales. Keep your eye attuned to situations like this to get the most from your advertising dollars.

LESSON 4

As Lesson 3 illustrates, sometimes your best advertising investment may actually cost you less money. When you are first starting out, whether you are running a home business or a business outside of your home, you need to be able to get people talking and thinking about your business.

If you are busy testing ads in media's such as the newspaper, magazines, radio, and television, you need to learn ways of promoting your business that do not require large cash expenditures. A few examples are:

Word of Mouth
Business Cards
Press Releases
Non-Primetime Ads on Radio and Television

WORD OF MOUTH

This of course is the cheapest kind of advertising on the planet --- it does not cost you anything. Ask your customers if they know anyone who could also use your products or services. When they are happy with your offerings and service, they will be willing to tell you whom you can contact, and they will pass the word for you.

BUSINESS CARDS

You can usually pick up 500 business cards for about $20. When you do, hand them out. Do not give more than a couple of cards to each person. If they need more cards from you, they will ask.

Some people are known to network with others on a regular basis. Some of these people are also known to be always looking for an extra few bucks. With these people, you can suggest to them that if they write their name on the back of one of your business cards and the card is presented to you, then you will pay a referral fee to them. You do not have to offer much --- sometimes one dollar is enough. Look at your home business and your offerings and decide how much would be a good referral fee.

PRESS RELEASES

Press Releases are a good source for generating news about your home business. The business editor at your local newspaper is always on the lookout for a good business story to fill the business news section of the newspaper.

Of course, the business editor understands the economics of running a paper and is more inclined to run your story if you buy advertising in his/her publication, but will still print stories for special events and openings.

The important thing to remember about Press Releases is that it must be constructed in the form of a news story. Even if you are a sole proprietorship, quotes from you should be written in a third person format: John Doe said, "Your quote here."

A Press Release should pack the most important information at the beginning of the copy, and leave extra details towards the end.

You should always provide the reporter who gets the task a simple and easy way for him/her to contact you directly. Often the reporter will want to contact you to get details that will enhance their take on your story.

NON-PRIMETIME ADS ON RADIO AND TELEVISION

Believe it or not, some of the best rates for radio and television are on the overnight and non-primetime venues. These target times are not a total waste as they can easily keep the infomercial people in business.

These off-hours are just less populated than the primetime hours.

Don't be afraid to check your local radio and television rates for non-primetime hours to see what bargains may exist. With television, primetime is 7pm to 10pm. With radio, primetime is 8am to 5pm. This sure leaves a whole lot of hours available to advertise your home business at discount rates!

A few years ago I married an Italian woman and left my Caribbean island, I came to Italy to live among pizza, spaghetti and fashion, and to work as a waiter.

One day surfing the Internet, I discovered that many people were making thousands and millions of dollars from the net, then I began to investigate how to do it, in order to make money online too, because I had left my job as a waiter, I had no money and business was my passion.

All Affiliate Programs say that it is easy to make money and they provide you with all the necessary tools, suddenly I said: This is the opportunity of my life, the programs are free to join and I have nothing to lose. Believe me I was so excited that I could hardly sleep at night.

I began to join the first programs dreaming millions of dollars, I got my referrals links and started to promote my links everywhere I found a free advertising space but these free advertising took me to other programs of course always the same "make easy money" and I joined some of them. After a week I was member of at least 15 programs, working more than 11 hours per day.

My wife was very angry with me because I did not have time for her, the only things that I had in mind were the programs and the dollars I would make.

After a couple of weeks with a lot of programs and still no money the confusion in my head was tremendous, it was hard to remember all the programs I had joined, ID and password, my inbox was full of mails everyday with tons of offers. I thought that something was going wrong and tried to organize the work but at this point everything was very difficult. I was tired and with a terrible backache, but to give up is not my style.

I tried for weeks to improve my situation and to understand what was happening, if other people had made money why me not? There was no answer to my question. I thought that it was not for me, that I was not able to do this work. From the bottom of my soul something told me try, try and try, I continued to research and found a very interesting site that astonished me saying: "you'll get your money making site for free", you know 100% customizable, several streams of income in autopilot a lot of testimonials and so on.

I read the whole site 10 or 12 times, the guy seemed honest and I tried to imagine how I could make money with this site. The situation was five affiliate programs to join, only one with a monthly fee
($ 30.00) and around $ 40.00 between domain and hosting, 24/7 training and support and some bonus, I thought for a little while and decided to take part and risk some money I would get my own site ready to "make easy money".

After two days everything was in my hands, the big day had arrived and I did not lose one second went to the step by step guide (high quality) where he explained how to start. Everything was set up - a free autoresponder (suggestion upgrade ), campaigns to launch, pre written ezines and much more.

The point was that I had to spend thousands of dollars in adsense, solo ads, launching campaigns, upgrading the autoresponder and in order to customize my site I had to upgrade my account. I knew almost nothing about html, autoresponders and traffic generation and a lot of people were in my same situation.

As I had no money all these things were impossible to do for me, my life was a complete disaster and my dreams were gone with the wind. I was deeply afflicted and my wife wanted to divorce, what a terrible frustration.

Q- How many mistakes?

A- It is not possible to count them.

Let us see my situation after 4 months of intensive work

- Unemployed

- Still no money

- A big crisis with my wife

- A lot of affiliate programs

- In box full of mails even spam

- Around $ 550.00 spent

- Nobody on my list

- Zero traffic to my site

As you see I had fallen into the trap.

I felt like a fool who trusted everybody and had wasted four months of his life. At the same time I realized that in all those hours of long work and research I obtained experience and learned how the system works, then something good could happen....

Draw your own conclusions from my mistakes trying to work from home.

Moral : There is always something behind the scenes. You need an x-ray vision or you will fall into the trap.

You must invest in other skills that will help you to make more money. If you like to give make up, well you may want to invest books on how to become make up artist! You can charge people to do their make up and hair for them when they want to go to a party and different special events. I know a guy in college who made his money by cutting hair. He charged $8 for a hair cut while Super Cut charged $15. So people came to him to get their hair cut.
A special note on the "Lottery Ticket Club" scam: The lottery ticket club not only violates ponzi pyramid scam & chain letter laws, but Federal Interstate Gambling laws which make it illegal to send lottery tickets by mail across state lines (also backed up by many State laws) as well - and the argument "they are not being sold, they are gifts" won't cut it in court, since they are the "fee" for being a member of the "club." And while those running the scam stay safe basing their scam in Israel, the members of the "club" are wide open for prosecution.

StevePavlina.com was launched on Oct 1st, 2004. By April 2005 it was averaging $4.12/day in income. Now it brings in over $200/day $300/day $400/day $1000/day (updated as of 10/29/06). I didn’t spend a dime on marketing or promotion. In fact, I started this site with just $9 to register the domain name, and everything was bootstrapped from there.

Blogging software and hardware
I use WordPress for this blog, and I highly recommend it. Wordpress has lots of features and a solid interface. And you can’t beat its price — free.
The rest of this site is custom-coded HTML, CSS, PHP, and MySQL. I’m a programmer, so I coded it all myself. I could have just as easily used an existing template, but I wanted a simple straightforward design for this site, and I wanted the look of the blog to match the rest of the site. Plus I use PHP and MySQL to do some creative things outside the blog, like the Million Dollar Experiment.
I don’t recommend using a hosted service like Blogger if you want to seriously monetize your blog. You don’t get enough control. If you don’t have your own URL, you’re tying yourself to a service you don’t own and building up someone else’s asset. You want to build page rank and links for your own URL, not someone else’s. Plus you want sufficient control over the layout and design of your site, so you can jump on any opportunities that require low-level changes. If you use a hosted blog, you’re at the mercy of the hosting service, and that puts the future of any income streams you create with them at risk. It’s a bit more work up front to self-host, but it’s less risky in the long run.
Web hosting is cheap, and there are plenty of good hosts to choose from. I recommend Pair.com for a hosting account. They aren’t the cheapest, but they’re very reliable and have decent support. I know many online businesses that host with them, and my wife refers most of her clients there.
As your traffic grows you may need to upgrade to a dedicated server or a virtual private server (VPS). My web server is hosted by ServInt.net. What I like about ServInt is that they have a nice upgrade path as my traffic keeps growing. I’ve gone through several upgrades with them already, and all have been seamless. The nice thing about having your own server is that you can put as many sites on it as the server can handle. I have several sites running on my server, and it doesn’t cost me any additional hosting fees to add another site.

Build a complete web site, not just a blog
Don’t limit your web site to just a blog. Feel free to build it out. Although most of my traffic goes straight to this blog, there’s a whole site built around it. For example, the home page of this site presents an overview of all the sections of the site, including the blog, article section, audio content, etc. A lot of people still don’t know what a blog is, so if your whole site is your blog, those people may be a little confused.

Testing and optimization
In the beginning you won’t know which potential streams of income will work best for you. So try everything that’s reasonable for you. If you learn about a new potential income stream, test it for a month or two, and measure the results for yourself. Feel free to cut streams that just aren’t working for you, and put more effort into optimizing those streams that show real promise.
A few months ago, I signed up for an account with Text Link Ads. It took about 20 minutes. They sell small text ads on my site, split the revenue with me 50-50, and deposit my earnings directly into my PayPal account. This month I’ll make around $600 from them, possibly more if they sell some new ads during the month. And it’s totally passive. If I never tried this, I’d miss out on this easy extra income.
For many months I’ve been tweaking the Adsense ads on this site. I tried different colors, sizes, layouts, etc. I continue to experiment now and then, but I have a hard time beating the current layout. It works very well for me. Adsense doesn’t allow publishers to reveal specific CPM and CTR data, but mine are definitely above par. They started out in the gutter though. You can easily double or triple your Adsense revenue by converting a poor layout into a better one. This is the main reason why during my first year of income, my traffic grew at 20% per month, but my income grew at 50% per month. Frequent testing and optimization had a major positive impact. Many of my test failed and even made my income go down, but I’m glad I did all that testing. If I didn’t then my Adsense income would only be a fraction of what it is now.
It’s cheap to experiment. Every new advertising or affiliate service I’ve tried so far has been free to sign up. Often I can add a new income stream in under and hour and then just wait a month and see how it does. If it flops then at least I learned something. If it does well, wonderful. As a blogger who wants to generate income, you should always be experimenting with new income streams. If you haven’t tried anything new in six months, you’re almost certainly missing some golden opportunities. Every blog is different, so you need to test things for yourself to see what works for you. Failure is impossible here — you either succeed, or you learn something.

Expenses
Blogging is dirt cheap.
I don’t spend money on advertising or promotion, so my marketing expenses are nil. Essentially my content is my marketing. If you like this article, you’ll probably find many more gems in the archives.
My only real expenses for this site are the hosting (I currently pay $149/month for the web server and bandwidth) and the domain name renewal ($9/year). Nearly all of the income this site generates is profit. This trickles down to my personal income, so of course it’s subject to income tax. But the actual business expenses are minimal.
The reason I pay so much for hosting is simply due to my traffic. If my traffic were much lower, I could run this site on a cheap shared hosting account. A database-driven blog can be a real resource hog at high traffic levels. The same goes for online forums. As traffic continues to increase, my hosting bill will go up too, but it will still be a tiny fraction of total income
